New board members Katie Allen and Greg Hoyt were sworn into the Manhattan-Ogden School Board Wednesday. Allen works for a regional technical assistance center that works with school districts in Kansas, Colorado and Missouri. Kristin Brighton and Curt Herrman were both re-elected.
“I’ve always had a passion for improving conditions and opportunities for kids, and I think I have a decent base of knowledge that would be helpful for the school board,” Allen said.
Hoyt is a former Manhattan High School principal.
“I’m coming from 31 years working in the district so I’m pretty familiar with how it operates, It’s different on this side of the table but I’m really excited to be working here,” he said.
Herrman, a 17-year veteran of the school board spoke on the two newest members…
“Greg has a great background in education and I’m sure he’ll do a great job. Katie has a background in education as well, she does some state wide initiatives along with participating with the Kansas association of school boards.”
Katie Allen and Greg Hoyt were both elected in the fall to replace Darell Edie and Brandy Santos.. The school board also reorganized Wednesday, electing Jayme Morris-Hardeman as this year’s board president. Kristin Brighton will serve as the board vice president.
The board voted unanimously in support of an $86,000 change order for the Lincoln Education Center renovation project. This now brings the total amount to around $9.4 million. Consideration of a summer professional development institute was also unanimously approved, with the contract totaling just over $56,000 which utilizes at-risk funds designated to Northview Elementary.
