The Manhattan High girls basketball team has been installed as the eighth seed for this coming week’s 6A State Tournament in Wichita, setting them up for a tilt against Shawnee Mission South.

The Tribe advanced to the field of eight at Koch Arena behind a 45-39 win at Liberal Friday night. Kat Ball hit seven of eight free throws in the final quarter to hold Liberal’s comeback attempt at bay as the Indians won a sub-state title for the first time since 2018.

Shawnee Mission South claimed the top seed with a 47-32 sub-state win over Olathe North. The Raiders are 21-1. Their only loss was to Bishop Miege on the day following Valentines and they’ve won five straight since.

In 4A, the Rock Creek boys captured sub-state with a 48-44 overtime win against Ottawa Saturday night. The Mustangs are the seventh seed and will meet Atchison Thursday evening at six in Salina.

Valley Heights locked down a berth in the 2A Tournament in Dodge City and enter the tournament as the eighth seed. They’ll play unbeaten Wichita County Wednesday at two.

In 1A-D1, Frankfort’s girls advanced with a 46-41 win over Clifton-Clyde Saturday night. They’ve been slotted sixth and will open with St. John-Hudson at eight Thursday night in Colby. Their Twin Valley League rivals from Centralia will open with Norwich at four that same day.

Others from the region headed to their respective tournaments are the Silver Lake girls in 3A and the Axtell boys and Hanover girls in 1A-D2.
