It’s a common theme every year, but shopping local during this 2020 Christmas season is crucial.

Jason Smith,  Manhattan Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, says most local businesses are coming to the end of the relief funds they received for the pandemic and it is crucial for them to receive support. He says as an economic development organization, they have one major goal.

“To make sure that the local businesses have every opportunity to grow and that you’re capturing all of those opportunities, as well as preventing challenges that they may have that might prevent them from growing,” Smith says.

Smith tells KMAN that 80 to 90 percent of all new jobs are created by local businesses and they want to give them the tools to succeed. He adds that most people are surprised with how much the local businesses actually have to offer.

“We all need small business to survive, in order for this business to be vibrant and have the quality of life that we all want. I would encourage people to think small and think MHK. Check for items you’re purchasing from one of our local vendors first.”

Smith says one great way to support local is by giving the gift of Little Apple Dollars. These “dollars” can be used at a number of Manhattan businesses.
