After by-passing the pop-crap music loaded televised event for several years, I’m happy to report this NYE viewing staple will put the ‘rock’ back in ‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve‘.
Just this morning (12/07/23) Green Day announced on their social media that they would be performing five songs, including the live debut of ‘Dilemma‘ from their new album “Saviors“, due out January 19th, 2024. In addition to Billy, Tre and Mike, Thirty Seconds to Mars (and a bunch of performers we could care less about) will perform from various stages across the US.
Green Day last appeared in 2020 as one of the ‘Hollywood acts’ (with Alanis Morissette headlining in NYC). The year before that, Weezer played one song on the special.
Now granted, the yearly show has always been mostly pop, with a few actual rock acts thrown in. For example, in the 70s, (and I’m being generous here on the definition of ‘rock) with BTO, Doobie Brothers and Three Dog Night. In the 80s Blondie and Night Ranger made the cut, and then in 2001 KISS and Bon Jovi were featured, albeit each band’s star had definitely faded by then.
This year the special features over five hours of live music, along with spotlights from across the world as other cultures celebrate the New Year. It will air live Sunday, December 31, on ABC beginning at 7:00 p.m. CT and stream on the ABC app streaming platform.
Originally launched in 1972, the show is still incredibly popular. Last year’s edition pulled 13.8 million homebodies. The New Year’s Rockin’ Eve has been the most-watched New Year’s Eve special for over 30 years. Now in its 52nd year the 2024 show will again be hosted by Ryan Seacrest, who took over from Dick Clark in 2005 (after his stroke). After Clark’s death in 2012, Seacrest was named permanent host.
Just last month, Seacrest re-upped his contract to host the show into 2029.
