Patrons may soon be able to roam around downtown Manhattan with drinks in hand.

City commissioners on Tuesday directed city staffers to explore the creation of a common consumption area daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., that would include most areas around Poyntz Avenue and Houston Street businesses from 3rd to 5th Street.

Gina Snyder, executive director of Downtown Manhattan, Inc., called it a major step forward for the business district.
