There will be no fun in the sun for Westy kids this summer, as the pool will remain closed. It needs thousands of dollars of repair work, which could not be completed in time use this year. (Pottawatomie County Times photo)

The Westmoreland pool will not be opening this summer due to repair issues discovered last month as city officials were preparing for opening day.

At an April 11 city council meeting, the city’s maintenance supervisor Bob Krohn estimated repairs to cost between $76,000 to $100,000. Those costs do not include maintenance needs like the replacement of an obsolete pool heater, pump, as well as ADA accessibility and food safety issues.

City officials have previously estimated building a new pool could cost Westmoreland in excess of $7 million.

The city council has agreed to contact SMH Consultants to test the pool’s structural integrity and define some reliable numbers of the city’s best course of action.
