Wednesday’s Manhattan-Ogden School Board meeting marked the final meeting for Dr. Marvin Wade, the district’s superintendent for the past seven years.
Dr. Wade’s last day with the district is Friday and he’ll be succeeded in that position by Eric Reid, the district assistant superintendent.
Wade was on KMAN’s In Focus Wednesday morning ahead of the board meeting and noted he’s looking forward to retirement, but will miss the work he’s done for years.
Wade says one of the district’s biggest accomplishments has been the $129 million bond, approved by voters in 2018 that has allowed for the renovations of existing buildings as well as the construction a new elementary school.
Board member Brandy Santos says Wade has been an important part in shaping the purpose of USD 383 and has been an exceptional leader in navigating the changes that the district has faced over the past few years.
Dr. Wade led the district through the COVID-19 pandemic and after schools were shut down by state officials in the spring of 2020, Wade led the pandemic response plan, partnering with a committee that included district officials, the Riley County Health Department and others. While some of the moves were criticized, including moving students to hybrid learning during the 2020-21 school year to keep students and staff safe amid an uncertain pandemic, Wade was consistent to listen to the data from health officials and stuck with the plan to keep schools open throughout.
Board Vice President Jayme Morris-Hardeman says Wade has always shown genuine interest for the kids’ education and future.
While Wade has left his Superintendent job behind, he says he will stay in Manhattan and will continue to engage with the community.
