The animals were acquired through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, of which the Sunset Zoo is a member. Kirkwood breaks down how these and similar animals are brought to Manhattan:

A key aspect of the acquisition of new animals is the authorization of Sunset Zoo to engage with breeding programs:

The zoo is routinely collaborating with the AZA to bring in new animals for the general public. The takin and okaupi will be available for visiting by late spring or early summer.
