WICHITA — After finishing second last year, Slade Smith had one goal in the Class 4A high jump — grabbing that gold medal. The senior did just that, jumping 6 feet, 9 inches to bring home a first-place finish for Wamego.
“It feels amazing to be a state champion,” Smith said. “I mean, I knew I could and was going to do it, but it still feels amazing to be on the podium.”
