The longtime director of the Flint Hills Discovery Center was recognized at a Thursday retirement reception.
Susan Adams took on that title in 2016, but her history with the Discovery Center dates back to October 2011, first working in a temporary construction trailer prior to the opening of the facility in April 2012. Adams says she was overwhelmed by the reception she received.
“It’s just a reassuring feeling that it’s not done because I’m walking away, they will still continue to support the Discovery Center. That’s important to me,” she said.
Adams says there are a number of highlights from her tenure as director, from growing attendance and memberships to new projects that have enhanced visitor interaction.
“In fact, I made a list the other day, from our five year anniversary, our 10 year anniversary. We did the prairie garden area up on the third floor, did all the interpretive panels and there was such an important value to that. There was value for people to know they didn’t have to pay to come in and could learn and be educated about what’s so important about our mission here,” she said.
In 2023, the Discovery Center welcomed over 95,000 visitors.
Stephen Bridenstine has been named the Discovery Center’s interim director.
“With Susan Adams retiring, I’ve got really big shoes to fill, but I’m excited to fill them and keep the Discovery Center going. We’ve had a successful year and I expect 2024 to be the best one yet,” he said.
The Discovery Center is one of seven Manhattan locations participating in Sunflower Summer, where eligible families can visit for free. That program runs May 25 through Aug. 11.
The Discovery Center’s summer exhibit Amazing Butterflies is also on display now through Sept. 8.
