The Riley County Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam after a Manhattan woman reportedly lost $1,000.

Officers filed a report of theft by deception and unlawful computer acts just after 1 p.m. July 26 in the 600 block of Moro Street.

Police said a 28-year-old woman reported receiving a call from someone using a spoofed local phone number who falsely claimed to be an RCPD officer. The caller allegedly threatened her with immediate arrest for missing court dates unless she made payments using Chime barcodes purchased at a retail store.

Anyone receiving a similar call is encouraged to contact the department at (785) 537-2112 before taking any action.
