Riley County Police Department this week proposed a $30.85 million budget for 2026, which would be a 7.28% increase from 2025.

However police board members unanimously rejected the proposal, and chairman John Matta said the increase was twice as high as he wanted it to be.

Director Brian Peete said the proposed number, presented Monday, includes cost-of-living raises, a new corrections sergeant, security camera equipment and money for contractual services such as help during community parades and races.
