Over 800 athletes and coaches from across the state will be pouring into Manhattan for the upcoming Special Olympics state basketball tournament.
It’s the second consecutive year Manhattan has hosted the two-day event.
Special Olympics Kansas Senior Program Director Krystin Guggisberg gave a rundown of Friday’s events.
“We’re starting at Anthony at 10 with our skills competition and cheer competition taking place. Those will take a couple of hours. Then at lunchtime, we’ll start our basketball play. And that actually is at both Anthony and Eisenhower. And then this evening, we actually have a banquet and a dance over at the four points by Sheraton.”
Activities begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, continuing through 4 p.m.
“Volunteers are still needed for the event,” says Guggisberg, “We have about 150 volunteers signed up at the moment, but we actually still have 100 volunteer slots still open. We’ll make do with what we’ve got, but we have a big need for referees, for which we’ll pay $15 – $25 per game.”
The tournaments are free to attend and gets kicked off Friday at 10 a.m. at Anthony recreation center.
