Both Manhattan High basketball teams suffered season opening losses Thursday at the Hays City Shootout, falling to the boys and girls of Millwood from Oklahoma City.
The girls fell 60-52, the boys 87-62.
The Indians led most of the girls contest, having withstood runs that brought Millwood to within one during the second and third quarters. They took a 44-42 into the fourth, but Brandie Harrod would score seven of her game high 23 points in that period as the Falcons outscored the Tribe 18-8 to take the win.
Kat Ball scored 15 for Manhattan. Maxine Doering added 14 in the loss.
The Manhattan boys led at the end of one quarter 20-17, only to see Millwood pick up their tempo and take advantage of turnovers. The Falcons rolled to a 29-14 second quarter, forcing the Indians to shift to man-to-man defense after halftime. From there, Millwood capitalized on its speed in continuing to steadily build the advantage.
Xon Williams scored 32 points, 15 in the second period alone, as Millwood wins its second game of the year.
Landon Knopp scored 14 to lead Manhattan.
With the losses, Manhattan falls into the consolation brackets of the 41st annual tournament at Hays Middle School. The girls will play at 6:00p Friday and the boys will follow. Coverage will begin at 5:45p on Newsradio KMAN.
