Members of the Manhattan Fire Department are beginning their annual fire hydrant maintenance program this week.
Firefighters will spend the next several months flowing and painting hydrants across the city. Flowing is performed annually to ensure proper operation and to flush out water lines. It sometimes can cause yellow or rust-colored water in your home, so firefighters recommend if this happens, to run water in a bathtub or shower for a few minutes until it clears up. If it doesn’t clear up, contact the City of Manhattan Customer Service Office at 785-587-2480 or the Manhattan Fire Department at 785-587-4502.
Residents are urged to use caution when in an area where crews are flowing fire hydrants. It can be a high enough pressure and volume to cause damage to vehicles if driven through. Children also should not play in or ride bikes through the flowing water.
Non-emergent issues can be reported through the city’s Report It! app for Android or iPhone.
