Two weeks remain in the high school football season and some key matchups loom this Friday night. Here’s a look at the games involving area teams:
Manhattan (5-1) at Lansing (3-3) – Coverage on Newsradio KMAN at 6:30p
The Indians have gained two big wins after their only loss of the year, besting Emporia and Junction City in their final home games of the year. A visit to Lansing will see them taking on one of the top passing teams in the state while trying to maintain their spot on the 6A West bracket.
Clearwater (2-4) at Wamego (4-2) – Coverage on B104.7 at 6:30p
After falling at 5A Shawnee Heights last Friday night, Wamego returns home to face a 3A team this week on the B104.7 Carpet One of Manhattan Game of the Week. After tonight, the Red Raiders have a key 4A matchup up with Abilene on tap next Friday. Clearwater has struggled to keep possessions going throughout the season, turning the ball over at least once in every game to date this year.
Rock Creek (4-2) at Clay Center (5-1)
This is the de facto 3A District 5 championship contest as both teams are 2-0 thus far. Rock Creek followed a strong win at Marysville with a blowout against Hiawatha last week, while the Tigers rebounded from their lone loss with a 53-0 romp over Concorida.
Riley County (3-3) at Nemaha Central (6-0)
The Falcons not only face the daunting task of facing the 2A defending champs on their own field, but have to try and break a string of shutouts the Thunder have put together this season. Nemaha Central has shut out every opponent but their opening week foe, Holton, and has only given up the one score on the year.
Junction City (3-3) at Topeka High (1-5)
The Bluejays have had the misfortune of facing the top two teams in the Centennial League this season back-to-back, suffering losses to both Washburn Rural and Manhattan while managing just one touchdown in each tilt. They’ll be looking to get healthy against a Topeka High squad whose only win came against Emporia.
Axtell (6-0) at Frankfort (5-1)
The defending 8-Man II champs just keep on rolling, having not given up a touchdown in each of the last two weeks and no more than a score in five of their six tilts. Frankfort has cruised in each of the last three weeks after suffering their only loss to Lyndon back in week three.
Blue Valley Randolph (2-4) at Doniphan West (0-6)
The Rams will be trying to gain a win for the first time in four weeks, having been shutout in losses to Axtell and Frankfort in back to back contests. Doniphan West has not had a single competitive tilt this season, including being blasted 84-18 last Friday by Linn.
