Former Manhattan Mayor Wynn Butler received diversion this week in Manhattan Municipal Court for an incident in May in which he crashed drunk into a liquor store.
Butler, with his attorney, Joshua Douglass, accepted the diversion agreement before Municipal Court Judge James Kepple on Tuesday morning.
In the document, obtained through an open records request, Butler agreed to complete 40 hours of community service, attend a drug and alcohol evaluation, and pay $1,348 to the city.
Diversion programs call for fines between $800 and $1,500. People are eligible if they have no prior alcohol convictions and didn’t kill anyone in their incident, among other criteria.
Butler was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on May 8 after he drove his car through the Candlewood Liquor Shop. He resigned the following day from the Manhattan City Commission and the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency Board following the arrest.
