Manhattan Fire says a contractor striking a gas line with a backhoe was the cause of a leak that caused the closure of Fort Riley Boulevard overnight.
Having been called out to the 1800 block of Fair Lane just after 4:15 yesterday afternoon, the fire department crew found an 8-inch natural gas line had been struck, begining a process that included employees from nearby businesses being evacuated.
Kansas Gas Service isolated the leak and stopped it around one this morning, allowing for Fort Riley Boulevard to reopen. The Union Pacific tracks were also closed part of last night, but reopened about 10 as repairs were underway.
No injuries were reported.
