The Riley County Police Department is investigating a theft by deception after scammers posing as law enforcement officers convinced a Manhattan woman to send thousands of dollars.

Officers filed a report of theft of property or services just after 1 p.m. July 6 in Manhattan.

A 23-year-old woman was listed as the victim after unknown suspects allegedly called her claiming to be local law enforcement officers and demanded payment for an alleged warrant related to missing jury duty.

The victim lost an estimated $5,800 in the scam.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Riley County Police Department or Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Tips can be submitted anonymously and may qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
