The Wamego Police Department is warning local residents of a new scam popping up that involves fradulent rental properties.

In a Monday Facebook post, the Department said that one person had fallen victim to fraud.

The victim was searching on a legitimate webpage for an apartment to rent, where he contacted the fake “landlord” through the website and then on the phone.

An appointment was made to meet at the property, but after the suspect didn’t show up, he called and apologized to the victim to schedule another appointment.

The fradulent landlord then asked the victim to send the security deposit before the second meeting. The victim subsequently sent the money via Apple Pay.

The suspect finally dropped out of sight and the owner of the property knows nothing about the transaction.

The rental property is managed by a legitimate company, but criminals can download details and photographs from webpages and use them for nefarious purposes.

No further details were released by the police.
