A Texas man convicted of a misdemeanor charge of sexual battery was sentenced to one year of probation Monday in Riley County District Court.

Judge Grant Bannister sentenced Mario Juarez, 28, of Dallas to one year in jail Monday morning, but granted a year of probation in place of time in custody.

A Manhattan man charged with multiple counts of varied drug offenses was scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Riley County District Court, but his lawyer postponed the hearings to allow for further discussion with his client.

Joseph Frank Fabre, 61, faces charges from three cases with alleged offenses including distributing methamphetamine near school property, possession of methamphetamine, three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of zolpidem, possession of fentanyl and Kansas offender registration act violation.

The Riley County Police Department will receive almost $20,000 from a federal program, to be spent on body-worn cameras for jail staff.

The U.S. Department of Justice on Wednesday announced RCPD is among nine jurisdictions in Kansas to receive money from the Edward Byrne memorial justice assistance grant (JAG) program. The program provides funding to support criminal justice and civil proceedings.

The Riley County board of canvassers unanimously certified the official results of the 2026 primary election Thursday after reviewing provisional ballots and election results from polling locations across the county. Residents case a total of 12,513 ballots.

Riley County clerk Rich Vargo presented the 2026 primary election canvass report to the board, including the total number of ballots cast at each polling location. Clerk’s office staff members also reviewed provisional ballots and recommended which should be accepted, partially counted or rejected.

Riley County commissioners on Thursday unanimously approved extending the contract for electronic health records software used by the health department as staff continue transitioning to a new system.

Michael Hawthorne, assistant county counselor, presented an amendment extending the county’s agreement with Custom Data Processing Inc. (CDP) through Aug. 31. The health department has used the company’s EZ EMR software for electronic health records management since 2018.

Prosecutors have dropped the case against a former K-State men’s basketball assistant in Riley County District Court.

Mark Randall Vital Jr., 29, was charged with one count of disorderly conduct. He previously pleaded not guilty to the charge, which originally included domestic battery. Riley County attorney Barry Wilkerson filed an order with the court on Monday, dismissing the case against Vital without prejudice.

A teenage boy from Manhattan received convictions on multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder, Saturday afternoon after his trial ran past its scheduled completion and jury deliberations carried into the weekend.

A jury found Dontaivious Amaru Temple, 19, guilty of two counts of first-degree attempted murder, criminal discharge of a firearm, aggravated robbery, three counts of criminal damage to property and criminal use of weapons.

A co-defendant in a case connected to two related shootings in 2024 took the witness stand in Riley County District Court Thursday morning and testified against 18-year-old Dontaivious Temple.

Temple, of Manhattan is charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, criminal discharge of a firearm, aggravated robbery, three counts of criminal damage to property and criminal use of weapons.

The Riley County Police Department is arming two district court screeners as part of a security change designed to enhance courthouse safety while returning an officer to patrol duties.

Maj. Daryl Asher told Riley County commissioners Monday the change follows a review of security measures at the Riley County District Court. The two court screeners will complete the same firearms and use-of-force training required of RCPD officers before carrying firearms.
