A woman is in critical condition after jumping approximately 70 feet from a bridge during a multi-vehicle crash Friday night near Ogden.

The crash happened around 8:44 p.m. on Highway K-18 near the East Riley Avenue offramp. Four vehicles were involved.

The woman had been standing on the shoulder when she jumped from the bridge to avoid being struck by another vehicle according to RCPD. The vehicle was reportedly swerving to avoid debris and other vehicles in the roadway.

Riley County EMS and Riley County Fire District Number One searched for the woman and provided medical assistance. The Manhattan Fire Department then used high-angle rescue equipment to lift her from the area below the bridge.

She was taken to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan and later transported to Topeka for additional treatment. She was in critical condition at the time of transport. No other injuries were reported.

The Riley County Police Department, Riley County Fire District Number One, Riley County EMS, Manhattan Fire Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Department of Transportation responded.

K-18 reopened at about 11:35 p.m. Friday.

No further information about the woman’s condition has been released.

A man from Lincoln, Nebraska, faces a federal charge of traveling for sex crimes following his Sept. 18 arrest in Manhattan.

Vitaliy Smal, 29, is charged with travel with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct in the United States District Court, District of Kansas. Law enforcement officers arrested him at Dara’s corner market on Kimball Avenue as part of a joint sex crimes sting in Riley and Geary counties by Riley County police, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and 12 other law enforcement agencies.

A Riley County District Court jury on Wednesday convicted a Manhattan man of attempted voluntary manslaughter connected to an October 2025 shooting on Marlatt Ave.

The jury found Jacques LaShawn Toliver, 38, guilty of attempted voluntary manslaughter caused by a sudden quarrel, aggravated battery and criminal discharge of a firearm at a dwelling.

The case of a Manhattan man charged with attempted first-degree murder is now in the hands of a jury in Riley County District Court.

Jacques LaShawn Toliver Sr., 38, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery, criminal discharge with a firearm, aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and assault against a 36-year-old man in March, May and October 2025.

The victim of a shooting in October 2025 took the stand Tuesday in Riley County District Court during a trial for the incident against Jacques LaShawn Toliver Sr.

The victim, a 36-year-old man, told the jury he and his significant other on Oct. 11, 2025, dropped their children off at a birthday party at an apartment complex where they used to live on Marlatt Avenue. As the pair walked back to their car, they encountered Toliver, 38, who had been involved with several previous incidents with the man.

A Junction City man responsible for the death of his 1-year-old daughter will serve 14 years and one month in prison for the crime and two others.

Riley County District Court Judge Grant Bannister sentenced Matthew Paul Wesley Miller, 26, to serve 10 years and eight months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for involuntary manslaughter, two years and 10 months for distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm and seven months for aggravated endangering a child.

Nineteen people were arrested in Riley and Geary counties last week during a joint law enforcement operation targeting sex buyers and people accused of attempting to meet children for sexual acts.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said the operation was conducted Sept. 17 and 18 in partnership with the Riley County Police Department, Geary County Sheriff’s Office and Junction City Police Department.

Ten people were arrested on allegations of electronic solicitation of a child and attempted aggravated human trafficking: Andrew David Green, 40, of Manhattan; Gabriel Guaman-Martinez, 26, of Manhattan; Scott Bradley Hamill, 40, of Lawrence; Adam Lee Lang, 42, of Manhattan; Gary Francis Lewison, 47, of Wamego; Chris Alan McClanahan, 54, of Abilene; Hawley Brock Douglas Needham, 32, of Manhattan; James Cameron Nunley, 38, of Westmoreland; Ezton Orozco-Agustin, 30, of Topeka; and Jose Guadalupe De Jesus Ortega, 37, of Manhattan.

A 29-year-old Lincoln, Nebraska, man was also arrested and is expected to face federal charges. Those suspects were booked into the Riley County Jail.

Seven others were arrested on allegations of buying sexual relations and unlawful use of a communications facility: Devon C. Brown, 36, of North Chesterfield, Virginia; Milton A. Guerrero-Vargas, 23, of Fort Riley; Bradley J. Moscou, 47, of Junction City; Mohamed A. Rahim, 28, of Junction City; Lamont K. Ray, 29, of Junction City; Roscoe B. Richmond, 42, of Junction City; and Zia R. Segule, 40, of Fort Riley.

Holly J. Goss, 47, of Topeka, was arrested on an allegation of selling sexual relations. Those eight suspects were booked into the Geary County Jail.

The KBI said victim advocacy services were offered to three potential sex trafficking victims during the operation. Authorities also seized user-level narcotics. No actual children were victimized during the operation.

Formal charges are pending and the investigations remain ongoing.

The Riley County health department will discontinue its reaccreditation process as it undergoes a broader reorganization and works to direct staff time and resources toward public health services.

The Riley County Commission voted unanimously Monday to discontinue the process after health department officials said completing reaccreditation would place additional demands on a department operating with several interim leadership positions.

Riley County election officials announced they’re seeking additional poll workers ahead of the Nov. 3 general election as preparations for the election enter a “critical phase.”

County clerk Rich Vargo said election work begins well before Election Day, with federal service ballots required to be transmitted by Sept. 19. The deadline applies to ballots for military and overseas voters under the federal service voting program.
