Riley County commissioners on Thursday said meetings with the city are pointless if county commissioners are not allowed to ask questions or participate in discussions.

Commission member John Ford said he disagrees with the structure of the joint county and city meetings, calling the current system for updates “pointless.”

“If we have something of interest or a challenge to discuss, I’m good with that, but just to talk about what’s going on … I can email certain city people and they’re usually pretty good about answering. I don’t need a 4 o’clock middle-of-the-afternoon meeting to accomplish that.” Ford said.

Riley County officials approved the Community Corrections Department’s request to apply for Clay County opioid settlement funds on Monday. This funding will assist Community Corrections with the cost of random drug and alcohol testing in Clay County, which it oversees.

“In 2021, we started random drug testing and alcohol testing in Clay County so that way, our services were similar in both Clay and Riley County,” Megan Lewis, the Community Corrections director, said. “At the time, we had been a sub-recipient of the Kansas overdose Data to Action grant.”

Lewis said the county received a total of $19,820 from the Data to Action grant cost for one year.

The Riley County commissioners on Monday swapped out their citizen appointment to the county law board after uncovering a potential conflict of interest.

Orville Maupin now will fill one of the seven roles on the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency Board after the commission previously picked Gary Olds to do so.

Commissioner Greg McKinley said the move came about after commissioners learned Olds wants to petition to alter the makeup of the police board by turning it into a separate, elected board.

“We thought that it would be a conflict of interest that he would be on the board and at the same time pushing to change it,” McKinley said.

By Emma Laura

The Riley County commissioners on Monday swapped out their citizen appointment to the county law board after uncovering a potential conflict of interest.

Orville Maupin now will fill one of the seven roles on the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency Board after the commission previously picked Gary Olds to do so.

Commissioner Greg McKinley said the move came about after commissioners learned Olds wants to petition to alter the makeup of the police board by turning it into a separate, elected board.

“We thought that it would be a conflict of interest that he would be on the board and at the same time pushing to change it,” McKinley said.
