Five people were injured Monday morning in a four-car crash west of Lasita Road on U.S. Highway 24 in northern Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 8:30 a.m. when a Nissan Sentra driven by 20-year-old Ella Thalmann of Palmer rear-ended a Ford Focus stopped to turn left, driven by 61-year-old Brian Shane of Alta Vista. The impact pushed Thalmann’s car into a westbound Dodge Ram driven by 33-year-old Trevor Clark of Manhattan.

Thalmann, along with Brian and Jacque (Jackie) Shane, were all seriously injured in the crash. All three were transported to hospitals in Manhattan and Topeka. Two others, 21-year-old Paden Taylor and 23-year-old passenger Martin Dylan, both of Clay Center sustained only minor injuries.

Clark and his passenger, 26-year-old Cameron Cooper of St. George, were not hurt. The crash remains under investigation.

A three-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 24 in Riley County resulted in injuries to two drivers on the morning of January 31, 2025. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash report, the incident occurred at approximately 7:16 a.m. at mile marker 305.7, about half a mile east of Blue River Hills Road.

The crash involved a 2008 Ford Taurus, a 2016 Chevy Equinox, and a 1996 Peterbilt semi-truck. Authorities stated that the Ford Taurus, driven by 19-year-old Haleana J. Simmons of Assaria, Kansas, attempted to pass another vehicle in the eastbound lane. During the maneuver, the Taurus collided with the front driver’s side of the oncoming Chevy Equinox, driven by 23-year-old Rachel M. Harmison of Leonardville. The impact caused the Equinox to overturn and land in the south ditch.

After striking the Equinox, the Taurus then collided with the semi-truck, driven by Brady Q. Meyer of Linn, Kansas. The Taurus also came to rest in the south ditch.

Simmons suffered suspected serious injuries and was transported to Wesley Medical Center. Harmison sustained suspected minor injuries and was taken to Via Christi Manhattan for treatment. Meyer was not reported to have sustained any injuries.
