K-State’s Anderson Hall will be looking good as new after upcoming renovations, with restored bricks, new balconies and a walking plaza in place of Mid-Campus Drive.

At Friday’s State of the University address, K-State president Richard Linton presented the Campus Master Plan and explained changes planned for the university, from a new walking trail along Campus Creek to renovating Ahearn Field House into an event space.

The master plan is still pending formal approval from the Kansas Board of Regents. K-State will bring this before KBOR at its next meeting on Sept. 17.

Surrounded by the peaceful backdrop of water fountains and colorful flowers in K-State’s botanical garden, party guests sipped gin and tonics while socializing before dinner on Friday night. The summer soirée showcased the hard work of K-State’s gardeners and raised money for the future of horticulture.

“This is our 150th anniversary of having the gardens on campus,” Scott McElwain, director of the K-State gardens, said. “This party tonight is actually an annual fundraiser.”

Horticulture is one of the university’s oldest departments. The original garden was located outside of Dickens Hall, formerly the school of horticulture, where Bluemont Hall now stands. In 1978, the Horticulture Department moved the garden to its location on Denison Avenue.

Since arriving at Kansas State over three years ago, president Richard Linton has been tasked with increasing student enrollment. After nearly a decade of declines, K-State has seen increases each of the past two years, including a 2.8% enrollment increase last fall.

Appearing on Within Reason with Mike Matson on KMAN this week, Linton said K-State is following a University of Arkansas model to attract high performing out-of-state students, by offering in-state tuition or a significant discount on out-of-state tuition.

“I think last year we were up 14% in our out-of-state students, so it’s a way to be able to go after a higher student market,” he said. “I think we also need to do a better job of articulating the value of higher education and the value of a degree.”

Some research programs funded with federal grants are halted at K-State, officials said this week, though they were short on specifics as information from the federal government has been limited.

The university has made a website to answer questions about a White House freeze on federal grants and loans that came last week. K-State President Richard Linton called the situation “fluid and fast-moving.”

“We are working to find answers and communicate as quickly as we can,” Linton said. “I am proud that leaders across K-State are working hard to address potential impacts and ensure momentum and progress toward our mission.”
