At just 15 years old, Manhattan High golfer Charlie Haney already had a high school state medal in his pocket. Now he’s a Kansas Amateur medalist — and possibly the youngest in tournament history.

The rising sophomore put together back-to-back rounds of 65 and 67 in stroke play last week at the 115th Kansas Amateur Championship, finishing 12-under at Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta.

Out of 154 of the state’s best amateurs, Haney qualified as the No. 1 seed for match play and earned medalist honors. Central Links Golf is still verifying the records as of press time, but Haney is believed to be the youngest player ever to top qualifying at the event.
