Forecasters say the region is on track to see its first widespread snowfall of the season beginning Monday, with most of the accumulation expected from mid-morning into early afternoon.

Most areas are forecast to receive 1 to 3 inches of snow, though locally higher totals are possible depending on where heavier bands develop. While the system is not expected to produce significant snowfall amounts, meteorologists warn that the first snow of the season often brings a higher risk of travel issues as drivers readjust to winter road conditions.

A winter storm warning has been issued for our area. It will be in effect from 6pm this evening until midnight, Tuesday night. An extreme cold warning has also been issued and will be in effect from midnight tonight until noon, Thursday.

An impactful winter storm moves in this evening and continues through the day Tuesday. Snowfall amounts are highest along and south of Interstate 35, with lighter amounts toward the Kansas-Nebraska state line. Amounts may change if the system shifts north or south, so it’s important to stay up to date with the latest forecast. Travel is advised to be altered if possible this evening through Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service Manhattan could see 5-8″ of total snowfall.

Dangerous cold is also expected this week, especially tonight through Thursday, when wind chills fall to -15 to -30 degrees at times, with the coldest temperatures overnight into the morning hours. It is crucial to take precautions to protect yourself from the cold.
