Manhattan Fire Department deputy fire chief Ryan Almes on Monday confirmed to the The Mercury the cause of the fire that rendered the house at 1217 Wyndham Heights uninhabitable on Dec. 25.

MFD crews responded to the fire at 7:40 a.m. on Christmas and found heavy fire and smoke coming from the back of the one-story house with a walk-out basement.

MFD officials said firefighters “aggressively attacked the fire” and found neither of the two people who lived there were at home. The fire reached second-alarm status, but the 17 firefighters who arrived on six trucks contained it within 30 minutes. The last units had left by 10:30 a.m.
