Funding cuts may limit availability of local after school programming

Local families who rely on the Boys and Girls Club of Manhattan for could be forced to find other options for after school programming amid recent federal cuts to social programs.

The organization is a 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC), a federally funded program that provides academic enrichment and other services to students, particularly in high-poverty and low performing schools outside of regular school hours.

A federal freeze was recently implemented on these programs, which has limited enrollment at the Boys and Girls Club of Manhattan’s local sites in the Manhattan area.

USD 383 wants community input on screen time in schools

USD 383 school board members want individuals and groups in the community to participate in a series of meetings later this spring to discuss the effects of smart phone use and screen time on students.

In a joint letter to The Mercury Thursday, Manhattan-Ogden school board members called on “families, teachers, coaches, youth organizations, faith-based groups, and all who support young people to join us in tackling this issue.”

“The rise of smartphones and increased screen time among children and teens has contributed to alarming levels of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges in our population — most significantly in our children, teens and young adults,” the letter read. ” … Reducing screen dependence will take a shared commitment to educate families, promote healthier habits, and provide kids with engaging, real-world alternatives to digital entertainment and socialization. Meaningful change will require a community-wide effort.”

Federal grant freeze may limit USD 383’s Summer STEM program

Superintendent Eric Reid on Wednesday told school board members the program still will take place this summer but with a tighter budget,

The only federal funds USD 383 receives that have been frozen are come from the Department of Defense Educational Activity, a grant program that supports education of K-12 children from military families. Those dollars were a significant funding source for Summer STEM, and not having them may affect the program this year.

STARBASE, a partner in Summer STEM, suspended operations earlier this month because of a funding shortage.
