Area road crews started the process of pre-treating roads ahead of the predicted winter storm overnight tonight and into Wednesday.

The City of Manhattan said on X that they do have an overnight crew on call, but will not deploy them until we start to get accumulating snow.

They asked that residents keep vehicles off the streets as much as possible today and especially tomorrow, so plows can better move snow out of the way.

City’s snow crew was out 24 hours a day for six days after blizzard, official says

City crews plowed 42.24 million cubic feet of snow after last week’s historic snow storm, an official said Tuesday.

Interim director of public works Wyatt Thompson said at the city commission meeting that officials figured if the snow was 16 inches deep, the snow they plowed between Jan. 4 and Jan. 9 could have filled City Park Pool 468 times. That amount of snow also could have filled 12,500 train cars or filled Bill Snyder Family Stadium 400 feet deep.

Thompson said public works had 31 operations team members who were able to mobilize quickly.

“We had a couple members of our traffic team, as well as six members of the public utilities department who joined us,” he said. “We had 21 pieces of equipment out on the streets 24 hours a day, from midday on the fourth until midday on the ninth.”

Crews to focus on widening plowed streets in ‘Snow Blitz’ this week

City officials on Tuesday launched a plan to plow the lingering snow still piled along many streets from the blizzard more than a week ago.

“Snow Blitz,” as local government officials are calling it, will focus on clearing space for two lanes of traffic on public streets, where possible.

“We will address the following public infrastructure: alley entrances, ADA/sidewalk ramps, side streets and intersections and their corners,” Manhattan city officials said in a written statement. “The day after clearing a street, city crews plan to come back and apply treatment with salt brine to accelerate melting this week.”

The plan divides Manhattan into five zones and will last through at least Friday. Crews from local companies, which have been pitching in

• Zone 1 – Midwest Concrete Materials will start in the Davis Drive area and branch out to the west, north, and southeast.

• Zone 2 – Bayer Construction Co. Inc. will start in the Colbert Hills area, then proceed to the south and east.

• Zone 3 – Blueville Nursery Inc. will start at Anderson and Denison, proceeding northwest (K-State campus will not be included).

• Zone 4 – Garibay Lawn Care and Landscaping will start around Eisenhower Middle School and proceed southeast.

• Zone 5 – City of Manhattan Public Works will start southwest of Sunset Zoo, then proceed east through the Westwood area and into the Ward districts.

Officials are asking drivers to remove their vehicles from streets if possible during the day so we can more effectively remove snow from the roadways.

People can report problem areas in other zones through the Report It system.
