Andrew Von Lintel filed with the Riley County Clerk’s office on Monday. The 42-year-old said he has concerns with the city’s rising debt and a growing annual budget.

“It seems like in recent years we’ve been increasing both a lot,” he said. “I noticed that the state of Kansas has a debt limit on Manhattan, and we’ve used 80% of that credit limit. I don’t really see a reason why we should be doing that.”

Von Lintel grew up in Elkhart and graduated from Kansas State University in 2005 with a political science degree. He said he only recently became more interested in local politics.

Rep. Sydney Carlin said Monday she decided to flip her vote last week on a package of 15 overrides of Gov. Laura Kelly’s budget vetoes because of K-State.

Carlin, a Manhattan Democrat, told The Mercury her decision was based on protecting a funding request from Kansas State University to construct a diagnostic laboratory at the university’s Veterinary Medical Center.

“There’s been some argument about whether it was really a state lab or not,” she said. “(Kelly) vetoed it two years in a row, and I thought, ‘This can’t go on.’”

State Rep. Angel Roeser of Manhattan has again played a swing-vote role on a contested issue in the statehouse.

Roeser switched her vote Tuesday to provide the necessary margin for Republicans to override a veto by Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat. The override means that a law will go into effect that requires all mail-in ballots to be counted by 7 p.m. on Election Day. Previously, mail ballots would count so long as they were postmarked by Election Day and arrived to the elections office by the following Friday.

Republicans argued that the move would help secure elections and would boost public confidence in them. Democrats argued that the earlier cutoff would mean otherwise legitimate votes wouldn’t get counted, and contended more specifically that it would harm seniors, college students and people in rural areas.

Hochman is a 25-year Manhattan resident with both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in education from K-State. She’s currently working on a PhD in student affairs in higher education.

In a written statement released Tuesday, Hochman said full student inclusion is a priority of hers.
