A Manhattan man was sentenced Monday to nearly 11 years in prison after he was convicted in Riley County District Court of involuntary manslaughter, distribution of fentanyl, distribution of marijuana and possession of fentanyl.

Luke Patrick Johnson, 22, was sentenced to a combined prison sentence of 10 years and 10 months for his convictions, which come from two separate court cases. He entered a plea deal with the state Aug. 18.

Johnson’s charge of involuntary manslaughter is tied to the 2023 death of 18-year-old Haley George. In statements to Judge John Bosch, several of her family members lamented that George wouldn’t get a second chance to live her life, while Johnson would.

A Riley County District Court case charging a 20-year-old Olathe man with rape and aggravated sexual battery was dismissed by the court Monday.

Kane Harris was set to go through trial last week for charges of rape and aggravated sexual battery that he was alleged to have committed against a woman in September 2022. A jury was selected for the case but had not yet been sworn in when the alleged victim did not arrive for the first day of testimony.

A man serving as designated driver at a Halloween party in 2023 said he didn’t realize the sex he heard between two people that night may not have been consensual.

Darnell Hall told a jury in Riley County District Court Tuesday that he saw Joshue Sandoval Serrano, now 23, holding a passed-out woman on the couch after both of them had been drinking heavily that night. Hall, the designated driver for the evening, had just returned from bringing someone else home when he saw the woman in Sandoval Serrano’s arms. Hall said he later heard the two having sex.

A Riley County Police Department detective said in court Thursday afternoon that the medical records of several alleged victims of former local chiropractor Clark Petersen could not be found.

Detective Daniel Todd was part of the investigation into Petersen, and told the jury and Riley County District Court Judge Grant Bannister that records he requested for the alleged victims, with their consent, could not be found by the new custodian of those records.

Todd explained while most evidence in the case was taken and kept by law enforcement, the protected medical records of patients were entrusted to another local chiropractor after being taken from Petersen.
