The Manhattan city commission on Tuesday unanimously approved three requests related to the Manhattan Infill Housing project.

“Since it has changed, (the project) still includes 40 units,” said Stephanie Peterson, director of community development. “Those units are going to be three bedroom, two baths. There are 28 units that are at the LK Townhomes site, and then 12 at Lee Mill Village. There are going to be 22 for-sale units at LK and and Lee Mill Village combined. And then the 18 rental units for this project are all contained in LK.”

The city confirmed that the housing units would not be permitted for use as short-term rentals in any capacity for a 10-year period.

All eyes will be on the Riley County Commission Thursday as the board considers a possible veto of a Manhattan workforce housing project.

In a Wednesday newsletter to its members, the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce reiterated its support for the project and urged the county to support the project.

“We would be disappointed if the county would take this approach on the issue,” the letter stated. “We cannot continue to pay for existing services if we don’t grow. The existing tax burden on our residents, small businesses and entrepreneurs and lack of growth to provide more jobs and shopping opportunities is dragging down our ability to achieve our full economic potential.”

A “workforce housing” project in northwest Manhattan is one step closer to becoming a reality.

City commissioners on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution of intent to establish a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) on Little Kitten Avenue, setting the stage for a May 20 public hearing.

Frontier Development is looking to construct 26 new duplexes, at a total cost of around $9 million.
