The jury in the trial of former Manhattan chiropractor Clark Petersen was not excused Friday morning, despite having reached a verdict in the case the night before. They had the additional task of ruling whether or not a judge could have the possibility of inflicting a more severe punishment than usual.

After about 45 minutes of deliberation, the jury ruled there was evidence of an aggravated factor, meaning Petersen could be sentenced more severely than typical for his crimes.

Upon the finding from the jury, Riley County District Court Judge Grant Bannister revoked Petersen’s bond. Petersen was taken into custody by officers in the courtroom.

Former Manhattan chiropractor Clark Petersen was convicted Thursday evening of 51 counts of sex crimes against 16 clients, after a jury deliberated for a day and a half in Riley County District Court.

The jury found Peterson guilty of four counts of rape, 40 counts of aggravated battery, four counts of sexual battery, one count of lewd and lascivious behavior, one count of attempted rape and one count of attempted aggravated criminal sodomy. The victims, all women, said he sexually assaulted them during appointments.

The jury found Petersen not guilty of the remaining charges, which were two counts aggravated sexual battery and seven counts of sexual battery.

Attorneys for the prosecution and defense of Clark Petersen made closing statements Wednesday in the Riley County district court trial for charges alleging Petersen sexually abused 19 women who were former patients of his.

A former Manhattan chiropractor, Petersen, 66, was arrested in August 2023 for 19 charges, which by the beginning of trial grew to 64 counts, ranging from rape to aggravated sexual battery to aggravated criminal sodomy. Four of the charges have since been dropped by the prosecution.

Representing the state, Christina Trocheck told the jury this case is about the violation of trust of 19 women who had no ill will toward Petersen or his family, and depended on him to help them with pain and discomfort in order to go about their daily lives.
