At 7:40 a.m. on Wednesday, the Manhattan Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1217 Wyndham Heights Drive. Fire crews arrived to find heavy fire and smoke coming from the back of a single-family home.

Firefighters aggressively attacked the blaze, which reached a second alarm, and searched the house for occupants. Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the fire. The flames were contained within 30 minutes, with fire units clearing the scene by 10:30 a.m. A total of 17 firefighters on six apparatus responded, supported by seven personnel from Riley County Fire District #1 with an air bottle refill unit.

The house, a one-story dwelling with a walk-out basement, suffered extensive damage, rendering it uninhabitable. Losses are estimated at $250,000 for contents and $450,000 for the structure. The property is owned by Kenny Fischer.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
