Downtown Manhattan merchants are finding new ways to lure customers into their establishments.

A new common consumption area was established in July, opening the opportunity for customers to freely roam a specified area with an alcoholic beverage. Jake Voegeli, co-owner of Manhattan Brewing Company, said after seven weeks in place, they’ve seen no issues.

“For special events like the Third Thursdays, we set up on our patio, and we’ll serve people as they walk by,” he said. “We might get one or two people that want to walk around and finish their beer, and they just come up and they’ll grab a cup and go. There’s not really a lot of change to the business, other than it makes doing events easier.”

Manhattan residents can stroll around with an alchoholic beverage within a boundary downtown starting on Third Thursday.

As previously reported, the Manhattan City Commission on June 17 voted 3-2 to establish the year-round common consumption area, referred to by downtown officials as the “outdoor refreshment area.”

The CCA will be an established boundary that will allow visitors to purchase alcoholic beverages from participating businesses and freely roam about from business to business.

“So 365 days of the year in this designated zone, on Poyntz from Third Street to Fifth Street and on north and south Fourth to the alleys and north and south Fifth to the alleys, you can consume alcohol in a plastic container purchased by our participating restaurants, and you can walk around,” Gina Snyder, executive director of Downtown Manhattan Inc. said.

Bridget Everett, star of the Manhattan-based HBO series “Somebody Somewhere,” brought CBS to the Little Apple last week to film a segment for CBS News Sunday Morning.

The series was inspired by her own life as a Manhattan native.

“CBS Sunday Morning really liked ‘Somebody Somewhere,’ and they are familiar with a lot of my stage work, so they wanted to do a profile on me and see where I’m from and get their boots on the ground and see Manhattan, Kansas, for themselves.”
