The Kansas State Wildcats had an incendiary second-half performance Thursday in their 44-41 win over Rutgers in the Rate Bowl at Chase Field.

Of the Wildcat contributors on both sides of the football, 16 were freshmen and sophomores. Those 16 include almost all of the offensive production, which consisted of 542 total yards, six touchdowns and a season-high 347 rushing yards.

Sophomore Dylan Edwards was electric from the jump. The offensive MVP ran for 196 yards — a new school record in a bowl game and the most yards in a game since DJ Giddens had 206 against UCF in 2023.

PHOENIX, Arizona — Rutgers vaunted rushing attack just got a little easier to manage.

Star senior running back Kyle Monangai will not be playing in Thursday’s Rate Bowl, Scarlet Knights’ head coach Greg Schiano announced during a Tuesday morning press conference.

Monangai, who made the trip down to Phoenix with his team, plans to help coach in the game while starting preparations for the 2025 NFL Draft.

“Kyle (Monangai) is not going to be playing,” Schiano said. “He decided not to, which I fully understand. Kyle has done so much for Rutgers. (I’m) excited for his future. He’s been awesome. He’s helped coach. He’s been at every meeting. If you didn’t know it, you would think he was playing.
