Kansas State has suspended women’s soccer head coach Colleen Corbin for two weeks following the use of a racial slur — even though her use of the term was objecting to its use — The Mercury confirmed Tuesday.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Corbin had asked players not to play pregame music that included some swear words, including the N-word, before K-State’s exhibition versus Arkansas on March 7, in Kansas City. In a conversation about the music, she reportedly said the N-word, and players complained to the university.

Corbin later used the word again when relaying the situation during a staff meeting, which led assistant coach and goalkeepers coach Maddie Dobyns, who was hired by Corbin this past offseason, to resign from the team.

Following that incident, Corbin was suspended from the team for two weeks after a meeting with athletics director Gene Taylor on March 23.

From K-State Sports

In front of a sold-out crowd, Aniya Clinton knocked down 17 kills to power K-State to a straight-set victory over 20th-ranked Colorado Saturday afternoon at Morgan Family Arena, 25-20, 26-24, 25-18.

K-State (14-7, 7-6 Big 12) rallied behind a .324 hitting percentage and 28 combined kills from Clinton and Shaylee Myers to capture the team’s third upset over a Top 25 opponent this season, improving to 3-4 on the year.

The victory marked the fifth sweep over a ranked opponent under head coach Jason Mansfield, as the Wildcats improved to 9-17 overall in the Mansfield era.

In her first match back since October 29, Clinton turned in a dominant performance, as she paced both squads with 17 kills at an incredible .536 clip with just two errors. The native of Midland, Texas, registered her 700th career kill with her first of the match in Set 1.

Myers recorded her 18th consecutive match with double-digit kills, totaling 11 in the win. Reagan Fox added eight kills followed by Jordyn Williams with six, who also recorded a match-leading six blocks (1 solo, 5 assists).

Ava LeGrand handed out 39 assists to go along with nine digs and four blocks, while Symone Sims tallied a match-high 12 digs.

The Cats’ defense held Colorado (20-5, 10-3 Big 12) to a .172 team efficiency behind nine blocks, handing the Buffs their first Big 12 loss to an unranked team. Ana Burilovic, the Big 12 Player of the Week, was the only player in the double figures for kills for CU (10).

For the first time this season, Kansas State soccer came away from a match with a loss.

The Wildcats (4-1-1) suffered two second-half goals by Nebraska (5-0-2) for their first loss of the season.

Things looked promising to start for Colleen Corbin’s team out of the gate. Rilyn Rintoul was fouled near the penalty box, but it was ruled that the foul was committed outside the box. Instead of a penalty kick, K-State was awarded a free kick, which was missed.

Behind a team-high 18 points from freshman Jayden Quaintance, Arizona State snapped a 6-game losing streak with a near wire-to-wire 66-54 win over Kansas State on Sunday afternoon before 9,121 fans at Bramlage Coliseum.

K-State (13-14, 7-9 Big 12) saw its losing streak hit 3 games with the loss, as the Wildcats played without their all-everything senior Coleman Hawkins, who is the only Division I player to average 10 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game.

Arizona State (13-14, 4-12 Big 12) had its own missing piece, as head coach Bobby Hurley dismissed the Sun Devils’ leading scorer B.J. Freeman (13.7 ppg.) prior to the road trip. However, it was Hawkins’ presence that was clearly felt more as K-State was held to a season-low 54 points on 33.3 percent (22-of-66) shooting, including 19.2 percent (5-of-26) from 3-point range.

The Wildcats were paced by senior David N’Guessan, who collected his eighth career double-double, including his team-leading fifth of the season, with game-highs in both points (20) and rebounds (13). It marked his second 20-point, 10-rebound performance of the season and the first since the season opener with New Orleans. He was joined in double figures by junior C.J. Jones, who scored 10 points 4-of-11 field goals. Jones earned the start in place of the injured Hawkins.

K-State returns to action on Wednesday with a trip to Orlando, Fla., to take on UCF (13-13, 4-11 Big 12) at 6 p.m., CT at the Addition Financial Arena on ESPN+. The Wildcats will return to Bramlage Coliseum on Sunday, March 2 when they play host to Colorado (11-17, 2-14 Big 12) at 3 p.m., CT on ESPN+. Tickets can be purchased online at kstatesports.com/tickets or by phone (800) 221.CATS.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (K-State Athletics) – Colleen Corbin, the 2022 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year who spent the 2024 season as the associate head coach at Saint Louis, was announced Monday as the K-State women’s soccer head coach by K-State Director of Athletics Gene Taylor.

Corbin agreed to a 5-year contract, which was approved by the K-State Athletics, Inc., Board of Directors and President Richard Linton.

Corbin will be formally introduced to the public during a news conference on Thursday, December 5, at 11 a.m., in the Steel and Pipe Team Theatre at the Vanier Football Complex. A live stream of the news conference can be viewed on the K-State Sports Facebook page.

“We are thrilled to welcome Colleen to K-State as the new leader of our soccer program,” Taylor said. “She has a proven track record of building and leading a championship program as evidenced by her time at Wyoming, and her most recent tenure at Saint Louis allowed her the opportunity to grow even more as a coach and put her stamp on an already established and high-level program. We look forward to welcoming Colleen and her husband, Nick, to Manhattan.”

“I am honored and thrilled to have the privilege of being named the next head coach of the Kansas State women’s soccer team,” stated Corbin. “I want to personally thank Gene Taylor, Jill Shields and Matt Thomason for their commitment and intention throughout the hiring process, as well as their trust in me and their belief in the K-State soccer program. It is evident that there are resources in place to help K-State women’s soccer be successful, as well as an incredibly supportive community who is excited about our team and the opportunity for continued growth and success.

“My husband, Nick, and I are looking forward to making Manhattan our home and joining the Wildcat family. We can’t wait to immerse ourselves into the community and experience all that the Little Apple has to offer. Go Cats!”

Corbin takes the reins of the K-State program following a season as the associate head coach at Saint Louis. During her time with the Billikens, Corbin helped the program to a 15-2-6 overall record, which included a 7-0-3 record in the Atlantic 10 Conference and the regular season and conference tournament titles and the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Billikens reached the second round of the tournament following a 1-0 win over Kansas.

Corbin was responsible for the Billikens’ goalkeepers and defensive backline, overseeing a defensive effort that registered 14 shutouts in the 23 matches. For the season, Saint Louis goalkeepers registered a save percentage of .835 while allowing 14 total goals for a 0.61 goals against average. She helped mentor the 2024 Atlantic 10 Defender of the Year, Lyndsey Heckel.

Prior to her time at Saint Louis, Corbin guided Wyoming to a Mountain West Conference regular-season co-championship and was named the league’s Coach of the Year in 2022 and coached the 2022 Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year, Jamie Tatum.

In her first season in Laramie in 2021, she led the Cowgirls to eight victories, equaling the most wins by a first-year head coach in program history.

Prior to her stint at Wyoming, Corbin served as associate head coach at James Madison (2018-20) and was an assistant coach at Arizona State (2016) and Cal State Northridge (2014-15). She helped James Madison win the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association regular-season title, coaching the Dukes’ goalkeepers to the top of the league in shutouts (7).

Corbin played collegiately at Oregon State, where she was a two-time NSCAA All-America honors as a goalkeeper and set school career and single-season records for goals against average and shutouts. She helped lead the Beavers to three NCAA Tournament appearances including a round of 16 in 2009. Corbin is a 2012 graduate of Oregon State with a bachelor’s degree in education.

The La Cañada, California, native went on to play two seasons of professional soccer. She was part of a Western New York Flash team that captured a Women’s Premier Soccer League title, and she played for the Boston Breakers of the National Women’s Soccer League.

What They Are Saying About Coach Corbin

Saint Louis Women’s Soccer Head Coach Katie Shields

“K-State made a tremendous decision in hiring Colleen. I am grateful for the time we spent together here at SLU. She is an elite recruiter that brings passion and intensity to helping student-athletes fulfill their potential. Her diversity of experience and expertise will be a tremendous asset to the K-State program and I look forward to watching her build something special in Manhattan.”

James Madison Women’s Soccer Head Coach Joshua Walters, Sr.

“I am excited for Colleen & Nick along with the players at Kansas State. Colleen is a very passionate and caring coach that seeks to develop the culture of the program along with the competitiveness on the field. She will pour herself into this project and impact everyone around her. What I also love for the players is that Colleen has done everything as a player they dream about doing at the collegiate and professional level. As a coach she is a winner and knows how to win championships. This is a fantastic hire for K-State.”

Utah State Women’s Soccer Head Coach Manny Martins

“Colleen Corbin is an outstanding hire for Kansas State University. She seamlessly combines high energy with a genuine passion for creating a positive and empowering environment for her student-athletes. Colleen’s ability to inspire and maximize the potential of her athletes will undoubtedly be reflected both on the field and throughout the community from day one.”

From K-State Athletics

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State soccer head coach Mike Dibbini has decided to step down from the soccer program to focus on his health. A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

“Due to some health concerns that I have dealt with over the last 18-24 months, I have decided to step away from K-State soccer to focus on my health,” said Dibbini. “It has been an honor to be the first soccer head coach at K-State. I am proud of what we were able to accomplish during the building process of this program over the last 10-plus years. The current and former players that have been here will always have a special place in my heart.”

The K-State soccer program was announced in October of 2014 with the first season slated for the fall of 2016. In late December of 2014, Dibbini was hired as the program’s inaugural head coach.

“We appreciate Coach Dibbini and all he has done to help build our soccer program,” Taylor said. “Starting a program from scratch is demanding and difficult and he and his staff have made strides over the past nine years. I think the world of Mike Dibbini. We wish Mike and his terrific family nothing but the best.”

During his nine seasons at the helm of K-State soccer, Dibbini tallied an overall record of 38-98-21 (.309) and made the program’s first and only appearance to date at the Big 12 Championship in the 2022 season.

Under Dibbini’s guidance, K-State achieved 100 Academic All-Big 12 selections, 24 Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team honorees, three All-Big 12 selections and two Big 12 All-Freshman Team recipients.
