K-State offered Jerome Tang the chance to coach out the rest of this basketball season and then resign with a negotiated payout at the end, but he turned down that offer and instead got fired for cause.

Athletics director Gene Taylor confirmed to The Mercury Monday that when he met with Tang Sunday morning, he offered Tang a choice: coach the rest of the season and then resign, or else be terminated immediately for cause. If Tang chose the former, there would be some kind of financial package offered to him in lieu of a buyout, at an undetermined amount that would be substantially less than the full buyout.

“We never gave him a specific number,” Taylor said.

A six-game losing streak was snapped Saturday evening as an incredible start by the Wildcats propelled them to a 73-60 win over No. 23 West Virginia, their first victory since a win over Cincinnati to open Big 12 play on Dec. 30.

“There’s definitely a weight lift,” head coach Jerome Tang said. “Man, losing sucks, and even though we saw that we were getting better and we were close, that doesn’t satisfy you. But what’s really important now is, can we keep getting better after a win?”

WICHITA — It will not be a merry Christmas for the Kansas State men’s basketball team.

After playing a competitive and, at times, fun first half of basketball, the Wildcats completely fell apart the second half of Saturday’s 84-65 loss at Wichita State.

“They were better than us tonight, especially in the second half,” head coach Jerome Tang said. “I thought their staff did a great job of putting a game plan together of how they wanted to attack us, and they really exploited that in the second half. And I thought their guys were just a little bit more connected.”

Prior to Saturday, the Wildcats (6-5) hadn’t played at Koch Arena since 2000, and hadn’t won on the Shockers’ home floor since an overtime victory in 1997. It’s also the first time since 2001 that K-State has lost to to their in-state foes to the south.

Long before Kansas State men’s basketball hit the floor at Bramlage Coliseum for the first time this season, the success, or lack thereof, of the “Manhattan Project” would loom beyond the Little Apple.

It’s been declared a new age of college athletics countless times across the country with the explosion of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals, coupled with looser transfer portal restrictions.

Many have compared the new landscape of collegiate sports to the free agency of professional leagues.

“The lack of leadership at the NCAA and some of the decisions that were made with people way above my pay grade have put us in a vacuum where we have no direction, and we’ve thrust all this upon these young kids,” K-State head coach Jerome Tang said following Tuesday’s three-point loss to Drake in overtime in the Wildcat Classic game held at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.

For the first time since the announcement of former Kansas State senior wing Achor Achor dismissal on Wednesday, head coach Jerome Tang met the with media, addressing the dismissal and other issues around the program heading into the final week of non-conference play.

Achor, who transferred to K-State after two seasons at Samford, played in seven of the Wildcats’ first nine games of the year, is the second player in as many years to be kicked off the team, following Nae’Qwan Tomlin’s exit early in the 2023-24 season.

Achor averaged 7.3 points and 2.7 rebounds in 13.2 minutes per game. Those minutes have to go somewhere, and Tang is looking toward the end of his bench to provide a spark as the Wildcats’ make the transition into conference play later this month.
