Voters will decide Nov. 4 who will fill three positions on the Manhattan City Commission.

The two candidates with the most votes will receive four-year terms, while the third-place finisher receives a two-year term.

The nine candidates are incumbent Jayme Minton, 39, a Meadowlark employee; incumbent Peter Oppelt, 37, a veteran and Travelers Insurance employee; Larry Fox, 71, former K-State Foundation director of real estate; Jim Morrison, 78, a retired Manhattan attorney; Scott Seel, 42, an Alliance Realty employee; Amber Starling, 32, founder and owner of Good Witch Cleaning Services; Martha Sweeney, 65, office manager for the K-State rowing team; Abena Taylor, 27, an administrative office specialist at K-State; and Andrew Von Lintel, 42, a Big Lakes Developmental Services employee.

News Radio KMAN and The Mercury provided every candidate with a list of questions covering current issues and their plans for office. Their answers are listed in alphabetical order. Responses are edited for space.

The election is non-partisan. Advance voting closes at noon Nov. 3. Election Day is Nov. 4.

Wareham Hall’s $40 million renovation project got a major boost Tuesday night as the Manhattan City Commission unanimously approved a package of incentives.

Commissioners authorized industrial revenue bonds and a 10-year, 100% property tax abatement for the project, which will also receive up to $6 million in federal historical tax credits to go along with state historical credits.

The project will also receive a $350,000 cash incentive as a reimbursement from the city for planned future public infrastructure improvements, which will be paid out of a combination of sales tax and transient guest tax dollars.

Jayme Minton was appointed to fill a vacancy on the commission in May 2024, following the resignation of former commissioner Wynn Butler. She becomes the first candidate to officially file for the 2025 city race.

In a statement to the Manhattan Mercury Wednesday, Minton said she has enjoyed serving and connecting with the community to better understand the needs and processes of the city.

“As a commission, we have engaged in major initiatives to secure and grow our community now and into the future,” she said. “I am excited to run for city commission this fall and continue to grow Manhattan into the future.”
