Longtime Manhattan High School girls’ basketball coach and mathematics teacher Scott Mall has retired, effective immediately, new MHS athletics director Shad Spilski confirmed to The Mercury on Tuesday.

“Scott has made the decision to retire from both teaching and coaching,” Spilski said. “We are going to miss him. For many years, he has served Manhattan High School, our community and our students well. He leaves enormous shoes to fill.”

Mall spent more than three decades helping shape Manhattan High’s girls basketball program, starting as an assistant coach before guiding the Indians to more than 500 victories during his tenure as head coach. His teams captured the 2017 Class 6A state championship while establishing one of the state’s most consistent programs.

In addition to coaching, Mall spent 36 years as a mathematics teacher at Manhattan High, part of a 48-year career in education.

Just weeks after coming within one playoff hole of a Class 6A state championship, Charlie Haney found himself playing for an even bigger title.

The Manhattan High rising junior advanced to the championship match of the 116th Kansas Amateur Championship, becoming the youngest runner-up in tournament history after falling to fellow teenage standout Kaden Leivian in a sudden-death playoff Sunday at Mission Hills Country Club.

EMPORIA — Before beginning their college careers in Manhattan, three future Kansas State football players represented their hometowns one final time Saturday in the 2026 Kansas Shrine Bowl.

Preferred walk-ons Jackson Hollie of Junction City, Blake Jay of Mill Valley and Nash Morrison of Basehor-Linwood competed in the annual all-star game at Emporia State’s Welch Stadium, where the East defeated the West 14-7.

EMPORIA — Manhattan High’s Garrison Vikander has become accustomed to playing at Emporia State’s Welch Stadium.

In addition to biennially making the trip south to face Centennial League rival Emporia High, Welch Stadium saw Vikander and the Indians reach back-to-back Class 6A state championship games, including a 27-0 shutout of Olathe Northwest this past fall to claim the program’s fourth state title and second under head coach Joe Schartz.

Manhattan High rising senior Maddie Myers has earned a spot on one of junior golf’s biggest stages.

Representing Stagg Hill Golf Club, Myers qualified for the 2026 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship after winning a playoff at her qualifier.

Former Riley County girls’ basketball coach Harold Oliver was inducted into the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame over the weekend, honoring one of the most successful coaching careers in Kansas high school basketball history.

Oliver’s teams appeared in 24 sub-state championship games and produced 13 20-win seasons. Riley County also captured three state championships under Oliver, while finishing as state runner-up once and placing third once.

Manhattan High seniors Brayson Gnirk and Carter Goodpasture were selected to the KABC Black Team after helping lead the Indians to a 21-5 season, a regional championship and a Class 6A state tournament appearance.
