FORT RILEY — Army officials renamed a Fort Riley street after a Medal of Honor recipient during the grand opening of a space dedicated to fallen soldiers on Tuesday.

The fort’s “Hall of Heroes” was previously housed in the Army community services building, but now has a dedicated space within the restored Grimes Hall. First constructed in 1931 as nurses’ quarters, the building houses a heroes wall, reflection room, digital displays and artifacts memorializing 97 soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“This is a space that family and friends can go in and reflect and think about their service member and the service, and just their memories,” said Col. Gerald Nunziato, Fort Riley garrison commander.

“Standing up a new unit is a significant moment,” said Army Cpt. Paul Shorkey-Chacon, company commander. “We’re here to activate a troop that will push the Army forward. But as we look forward, we also need to acknowledge the legacy we now inherit. We are filling the role once held by 1-6 Air Cavalry Squadron and their Apache helicopters. They set a standard of excellence, and it’s our job to honor their history by building a future they’d be proud of.”

Col. Gerald Nunziato said Friday that Fort Riley recorded an increase in the population of military families on base in 2025.

That’s good news for the local economy and a positive trend for Fort Riley soldiers.

Nunziato was speaking at the Regional Growth Summit, an annual event put on by the Manhattan, Junction City and Wamego chambers of commerce each year. This year’s event was at the K-State Alumni Center.

Fort Riley saw a 2.4% increase in family population in 2025, Nunziato said. That’s 15,482 family members living on post of off post in Flint Hills region. Of those, 9,145 live on Fort Riley and 6,337 live off post, according to data from the Army.
