Fort Riley to cease operations of Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard

Fort Riley officials announced Tuesday that, following a directive from the U.S. Army, it is concluding operations of the Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard to align more resources with warfighting capability and readiness.

Officials confirmed they will work diligently to find suitable homes for the horses and will keep the community informed throughout the transition.

The change does not impact the 1st Infantry Division’s Big Red One core priorities, which include building warfighting readiness; caring for soldiers, civilians, and families; adapting formations to win and developing inspirational leaders.

Fort Riley museums included in nationwide closings

The U.S. Army announced the closings of several museums on posts throughout the country, including Fort Riley.

Fort Riley has three museums: the First Infantry Museum, the Cavalry Museum and General Custer’s House. It is not yet announced how many of its museums will close.

The Center of Military History began a consolidation project to reduce Army museums which will continue through the 2029 fiscal year. The Army Museum Enterprise will reduce 41 museum activities at 29 locations to 12 field museums and four training support facilities at 12 locations.

Fort Riley’s Mounted Color Guard set to make history

The two-legged and four-legged members of a Fort Riley unit will make history in May when they perform at the Kentucky Derby.

Fort Riley’s Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard is set to participate in the opening of the Derby in Louisville, Kentucky, on May 3.

The color guard performs mounted drill and weapons demonstrations for community events, parades, rodeos and military ceremonies at Fort Riley. This year it has been invited to open the 151st annual race at Churchill Downs.

1st Infantry Division heads west for division-level training

The 1st Infantry Division from Fort Riley has returned to the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California, for a division-level training rotation.

It’s the third time an entire division has undergone training at the NTC and the 1st Infantry Division’s first time back since 2021.

Traditionally, NTC rotations have been the domain of individual brigades, but divisions now are rotating through the NTC in what officials called “a significant shift aimed at enhancing war-fighting capabilities.” The 1st Infantry Division will deploy its division headquarters and elements of its combat aviation brigade, division artillery brigade and division sustainment brigade to the NTC.
