City officials plan to locate utilities on Anderson Avenue this weekend, resulting in an overnight closure Sunday night to through traffic.

Public works will close the roadway from Connecticut Avenue to College Heights Road/Timberlane Drive from 7 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday. If needed, a second overnight closure will take place at 7 p.m. Monday and continue until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The city of Manhattan said local access would be maintained only for emergency vehicles and those with driveways in the work zone.

Manhattan Public Works crews plan to begin water, street and stormwater improvements at Anderson Avenue on Monday. This marks the beginning off a series of projects which will impact the corridor over the next two years.

“We’re going to be starting construction on Anderson Avenue, from Connecticut to Lee school,” Brian Johnson, director of Manhattan Public Works, said. “That’s the entirety of the project. We’re going to start from Connecticut to about the Unger complex, and we’re going to be reducing (traffic) from four lanes to two lanes, so you’ll be head-to-head now.”

Housing projects, street maintenance and cemetery improvements will be discussed at Tuesday’s city commission work session.

In April, the city opened the first round of workforce housing sales tax funding applications and have since received two applications for potential housing projects, both along Moro Street.

The first is from local developers Zach and Michelle Burton, who are seeking a $215,000 grant and a sales tax exemption for a proposed 15-unit townhome project at 1000 and 1004 Moro Street.
