The wind was blowing but the sun finally made an appearance Saturday as several came out for the 2021 Polar Plunge at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

The sun was no consolation for the nearly 60 plungers, many who arrived in costume, braving a 30-inch tall, 12-foot wide pool with bags of ice in it, provided by Manhattan Brewing Company. The plunge-time temperature Saturday at noon was just 56 degrees.

Organizers say over $14,000 was raised surpassing this year’s goal of $13,000, to benefit Special Olympics Kansas. Last year’s Polar Plunge was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Those taking the plunge included private citizens who donated, members of local businesses, the K-State football team, and members of the Riley County Police Department. A Special Olympic Athlete was also there to take the plunge.
