Five Manhattan firefighters have tested positive for COVID-19.

The firefighters are believed to have contracted the virus at an event they attended while off-duty.

Immediately following the positive test results, the Manhattan Fire Department and the Riley County Health Department began investigating if other emergency personnel or members of the public had been exposed.

Contact tracing is ongoing and employees who were in close contact are being tested and are following CDC guidelines.

MFD fire chief Scott French says early planning has ensured that fire service and emergency services will remain uninterrupted by the infections.
