The K-State Veterinary Health Center is looking for K9 blood donors.
Like people, dogs have diseases or injuries that require blood transfusions. As a result, the health center has a program where would-be canine donors can be enrolled and donate for those in need. The demand reportedly goes up each year.
Some of the eligibility requirements include having a dog between 1 and 5 years old, weighing 55 pounds of more and able to lay on its side for about 5 to 10 minutes. Eligible dogs must have never received a blood transfusion and must be spayed or neutered with the female dogs having no previous litters. Dogs will be required to donate blood every two months and must be within a 30 mile radius of the health center.
In K-State Today Wednesday, the health center shared the story of 2-year-old Red, a redbone coonhound who has donated six times since joining the program in 2020.
