The Flint Hills Breadbasket is hoping to tackle hunger in a big way.
The annual Souper Bowl food and fund drive takes place Saturday, Feb. 6, the day before the NFL’s Super Bowl LV. Former Riley County Attorney and event organizer Bill Kennedy says collection efforts will be done differently than in years’ past.
“We will be set up at the Flint Hills Breadbasket at 905 Yuma Street to accept food, looking for food of all kinds,” he said.
Volunteers traditionally are set up in front of the Manhattan grocery stores to collect food, but this year are asking donors to drop off items. Kennedy says they’ll miss having that 1-to-1 interaction.
“I can’t express to you really, what a thrill it is to see people come out and a little child come up to you as a collector and give you a can of stew, or soup or whatever. It’s heart-wrenching,” he said.
If you can’t make it out to the Breadbasket, Kennedy says local churches are satellite drop off locations.
“If they can’t get there, every church in town, every church in the area is primed to receive food at the same time Sunday morning before the game, and really at any time,” he said.
Volunteers will be receiving donations between 10 a.m. and noon Feb. 6 at the Breadbasket, located at 905 Yuma Street.
