Drivers in Manhattan will encounter another closure on Anderson Avenue beginning next week as work continues on the Anderson Avenue Water, Street and Stormwater Improvement Project.

City officials said Anderson Avenue will be closed to through traffic between Connecticut Avenue and Canfield Drive from Monday, July 27, through Sunday, Aug. 9.

The closure will allow crews to complete Phase 2A paving in the eastbound lanes between Timberlane Drive/College Heights Road and Oakdale Drive.

During the closure, no through traffic will be permitted on the affected stretch of Anderson Avenue. Motorists are encouraged to use Claflin Road as the designated detour and to use caution while traveling through construction areas.

The city expects Anderson Avenue to reopen before the start of the school year on Aug. 11.

Riley County commissioners on Thursday unanimously approved increasing numerous service fees, including raising the cost of dumping trash at the transfer station, beginning Oct. 1.

The resolution, presented by assistant county engineer Evan McMillan, is designed to keep the county’s solid waste fund financially stable while covering rising operating costs and funding future improvements at the county transfer station.

A 48-year-old man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after police say he attempted to steal merchandise from a Manhattan retail store using a device designed to remove anti-theft security tags.

The Riley County Police Department said officers filed a report just after 1 p.m. July 22 at Burlington, located in the 400 block of Third Place.

According to police, a male suspect was using a theft detection removal device in an attempt to steal merchandise from the store.

Carlos Jesus Lima De La Fe, 48 was arrested just after 2 p.m. on suspicion of attempted theft by deception and unlawful possession of a tool used to remove a theft detection device.

Lima De La Fe was issued a total bond of $12,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.

The Riley County Police Department is investigating a fraud case after a Manhattan man reported losing more than $1,300 to a scammer posing as a bank representative.

Officers filed the report just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 21.

A 35-year-old man told investigators an unknown suspect claimed to be calling from his bank and instructed him to send money through Cash App to a different account.

Police said the victim transferred the funds before realizing it was a scam.

The estimated loss was $1,364.92. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

A Manhattan man was arrested Tuesday evening after the Riley County Police Department investigated a report of criminal threats and stalking.

Officers filed a report just after 4 p.m. July 21 in the 800 block of Pebblebrook Circle for criminal threat, harassment by telecommunications device and stalking.

A 23-year-old woman was listed as the victim. Police identified a known 24-year-old man as the suspect.

Andrew Steven Goodwin, 24, of Manhattan, was arrested in connection with the incident on the listed charges.

Goodwin was issued a total bond of $10,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.

The Manhattan City Commission unanimously approved two rezoning requests Tuesday, clearing the way for a new Planet Fitness location on the city’s east side and advancing plans for the proposed Yuma Street Cultural Center.

Commissioners unanimously approved rezoning property north of the intersection of East Poyntz Avenue and Sarber Lane from neighborhood commercial to a commercial planned unit development (PUD).

The Riley County Police Department is investigating an attempted vehicle burglary that damaged an unmarked law enforcement vehicle in Manhattan.

Officers filed a report for attempted theft of property or services and criminal damage to property at approximately 7:07 p.m. Monday, July 20, in the 500 block of Third Street.

According to police, an unknown suspect attempted to burglarize an unmarked vehicle belonging to the Haskell County Sheriff’s Office, causing damage in the process.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Riley County Police Department or Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Tips submitted through Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

A Manhattan man was arrested Saturday after authorities say he threatened another motorist during a road rage incident on Interstate 70 in Wabaunsee County.

According to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 3:23 p.m. July 18 after receiving a 911 call reporting an active road rage incident on westbound I-70 near mile marker 330.

Deputy Aaron Platz located the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The driver continued west before stopping near mile marker 313 in neighboring Geary County.

Deputies, assisted by the Kansas Highway Patrol, conducted a high-risk traffic stop and took the driver into custody without incident.

The driver was identified as Martin Johannes, 21, of Manhattan.

Johannes was booked into the Wabaunsee County Jail on allegations of aggravated assault, driving in the left lane and impeding the normal flow of traffic. He was later released after posting bond.

The Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office reminded motorists to avoid engaging with aggressive drivers, create distance when possible and call 911 to report dangerous behavior.
