The Manhattan City Commission’s weekly Tuesday meeting is canceled, city officials said Friday. The commission will meet the following week to hold hearings on the city budget and exceeding the revenue-neutral rate.

The hearings will be at the normal commission meeting time of 6 p.m. on Sept. 15 at City Hall, 1101 Poyntz Ave., for the purpose of hearing and answering objections of taxpayers regarding the proposed use of all funds, the amount of ad valorem tax and the revenue-neutral rate.

Riley County Police are investigating after a vehicle valued at about $35,000 was reportedly stolen early Friday in Manhattan.

Officers filed the theft report just before 9 a.m. in the 700 block of Crestwood Drive. A 22-year-old man was listed as the victim.

Police said an unknown suspect stole the man’s 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan from a parking lot. The vehicle was later recovered.

Anyone with information is asked to contact RCPD or Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Tips submitted through Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and could qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

A 61-year-old Manhattan man was arrested Wednesday night on multiple drug allegations, including distribution of a controlled substance.

Robert Darryl Williams was arrested just before 8 p.m. in the 2100 block of Fort Riley Boulevard on allegations of possession and distribution of an opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant.

Williams also faces two drug paraphernalia allegations, including possession with intent to distribute drug paraphernalia for illegal use.

Williams was issued a $30,000 bond and remained confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of the report.

Manhattan Regional Airport will reconstruct its primary taxiway after Manhattan city commissioners unanimously approved nearly $15 million in federal grant funding for the project Tuesday.

The commission voted to accept $14,882,460 in Federal Aviation Administration grant agreements, approve a $1,474,700 task order with Olsson Inc. and award a $12,927,663 construction contract to Clarkson Construction Co. for the taxiway alpha reconstruction project.

The project will replace all three sections of taxiway alpha, which runs parallel to the airport’s primary runway, rather than replacing the two oldest sections as originally planned.

The Manhattan City Commission unanimously approved a $1.5 million Kansas Department of Transportation grant Tuesday to reconstruct the on and off ramps at the Kansas highway 18 and Kansas highway 177 interchange.

The grant, awarded through KDOT’s city connecting link improvement program, will cover 80% of the project cost. Staff members said the city’s share will likely be about $300,000.

The commission accepted the grant and authorized the mayor to sign the project’s programming request.

Riley County Police are investigating after a 98-inch television was reportedly damaged at RC McGraws in Manhattan.

Officers filed the criminal damage to property report at about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday in the 2300 block of Tuttle Creek Boulevard.

Police listed a 44-year-old man and RC McGraws as victims and said a male suspect damaged the television.

The total estimated loss was $3,200.

Residents and motorists who see emergency responders flocking to the airport on Sept. 10, rest assured — it’s simply a training exercise.

Beginning at 9 a.m., Manhattan Regional Airport will hold a full-scale airport emergency plan training exercise that is expected to last two hours. The exercise will continue until all training objectives are completed.

The training will take place inside the airport perimeter, primarily in the western portion. It will not affect public, private or commercial flight operations.

Automotive enthusiasts hoping to visit the Midwest Dream Car Collection this week will have to rearrange their plans. The museum announced a temporary closure following a single-vehicle crash on Friday that damaged the building and several cars in it.

A Riley County police spokesman said Tuesday that 58-year-old John R. Smith of Manhattan had a medical episode in his Subaru Forester, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle and drive through the front of the museum. Smith’s wife reportedly took him to Via Christi hospital. There is no police investigation into the incident.
