A recent scam threatens Kansas residents via text message with looming court action for fictitious unpaid tolls or traffic violations.

The Kansas judicial branch is raising awareness about the scam, which imitates messages from the traffic division in a Kansas district court. They list fake case numbers and the name of a judge who does not exist.

The messages attempt to pressure targets to send payments through a scannable QR code.

A Riley County District Court jury heard opening statements Tuesday in the case of a 22-year-old Junction City man charged with sex crimes against children he knows.

Mason Dusseault was an assistant wrestling coach at Junction City Middle School when prosecutors for the state say he fondled two 7th grade girls involved with the team. Police arrested Dusseault April 29 and charged him with aggravated indecent liberties with a child and indecent liberties with a child. He was released from jail on a $50,000 bond.

An investigation is underway after a Manhattan man reported his car and cell phone were stolen.

Riley County Police were notified Sunday afternoon after the alleged incident in the 900 block of Moro Street. The next morning, police arrested 21-year-old Isabella Counts on charges of criminal damage to property, criminal deprivation of property, computer unlawful acts and criminal deprivation of property.

Counts was jailed on a $6,000 bond but was no longer in custody as of Tuesday morning.

Authorities are investigating an alleged knife chase involving a pair of teenagers in Manhattan.

The Riley County Police Department filed a report just after 9 p.m. Friday when a 15-year-old boy told police a 14-year-old boy chased him with a knife.

Big bucks are coming to Kansas State University.

U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, a Kansas Republican, announced Friday in the Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Auditorium on the Manhattan campus that $4.9 million in federal resources will support K-State’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Moran, a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education, said the announcement is not just “a piece of good news” for K-State and the state of Kansas, but also for the world.

Riley County Police are investigating after a man reported his vehicle was stolen from his Manhattan home over the weekend.

A 40-year-old man told police someone stole his silver 2011 Honda Accord, valued at approximately $5,000 from the 1500 block of Pierre Street.

As of Monday, police had no word on a suspect.

They’re asking anyone in the public with information to contact RCPD or Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers.

A Manhattan man is jailed on charges of child endangerment and aggravated battery.

The Riley County Police Department says 29-year-old Joshua Downey was arrested Friday morning in connection to a criminal report originally filed in December. An online criminal complaint alleges the charges against a child born in 2019. The report also charges him with one count of child abuse.

Downey was issued a total bond of $30,000 and remained confined in the Riley County Jail as of Monday’s report.

A Manhattan man has been arrested in connection with an investigation involving sexual exploitation of a child, according to the Riley County Police Department.

Phillip Andrew Dews, 32, was taken into custody at approximately 1:30 p.m. April 2nd, 2026, in Manhattan. He is charged with five counts of violating the offender registration act, five counts of perjury, four counts of aggravated violation of the offender registration act, one count of sexual exploitation of a child involving possession of media of a person under the age of 18, and one count of aggravated internet trading in child pornography.

Dews was issued a total bond of $1,000,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this release.

The investigation remains ongoing, and due to the nature of the case, no additional information has been released.

A Manhattan man was arrested Thursday morning in connection with a January investigation involving multiple financial crimes, according to the Riley County Police Department.

Jacob Theodore Disberger, 27, was taken into custody at approximately 10:41 a.m. April 2nd in the 2700 block of Buttonwood Drive. He was arrested on nine counts of identity theft, six counts of criminal use of a financial card without the owner’s consent involving amounts between $1,000 and $25,000, four counts of criminal use of a financial card without consent involving amounts less than $1,000, and one count of mistreatment of a dependent adult.

The arrest stems from a report originally filed in January 2026.

Disberger was issued a total bond of $20,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.
