Manhattan High girls’ soccer broke through just in time Monday night, using a late goal to take down Wichita North 1-0 on senior night at Bishop Stadium.

The Indians (5-3-1) were coming off a two-game road swing last week, picking up a 4-1 win over Emporia before falling 5-0 to Bishop Carroll. The split moved Manhattan to seventh place in 6A West, but Monday’s win bumped the Indians up to sixth.

Kansas State men’s basketball added one final name to its list of transfer portal departures just before the deadline.

Forward Elias Rapieque entered the portal on Monday, marking the ninth and final Wildcat to do so this offseason. His entry was confirmed by his agent to DraftExpress.

It seems eight years isn’t enough for John Ford.

The incumbent District 1 Riley County commissioner officially filed for a third term on Monday. During an appearance Tuesday on Within Reason with Mike Matson on News Radio KMAN, Ford said there’s still some unfinished business he’d like to help resolve.

Manhattan Country Club decided to extend its existing management contract with an operator of golf courses, country clubs and destination clubs. The company recently received multi-year extensions for eight properties across five states.

A Riley County District Court judge sentenced a St. George man to more than 66 years in prison for rape and other crimes Tuesday in Riley County District Court.

Ricky Dunklin, 30, was convicted of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated domestic battery in connection with an incident in April 2021. All four charges involve the same victim. The Mercury does not identify victims of sexual crimes.

Two Manhattan residents were arrested early Tuesday morning following a reported domestic disturbance, according to the Riley County Police Department.

Officers filed a report at approximately 11:10 p.m. April 20th, 2026, in Manhattan for criminal damage to property and domestic battery. A 51-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man were both listed as victims and suspects.

Jon Thomas Harold, 41, of Manhattan, was arrested at approximately 12:34 a.m. April 21st on charges of criminal damage to property and domestic battery. Michelle Lynn Book, 51, of Manhattan, was also arrested at approximately 12:41 a.m. on a charge of domestic battery.

Harold was issued a total bond of $6,000, while Book was issued a total bond of $2,000. Both remain confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.

Robert Taylor Jordan Gibbons, 36, of Manhattan, was arrested at approximately 3 p.m. on April 20 in the 100 block of Courthouse Plaza on a Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear. This arrests stems from original charges of criminal threat. Gibbons was issued a total bond of $10,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.

Donnie Raylawrence Downs, 39, of Manhattan, was arrested at approximately 2:07 p.m. on April 20 in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road on a Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear. This arrest stems from original charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of THC, possession of drug paraphernalia, and criminal use of a firearm. Downs was issued a total bond of $20,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.

Wamego, April 20, 2026 — A standoff has closed a section of Wamego in the 600 block of Ash Street as law enforcement officials are attempting to remove a suspect wanted in Riley Co.

Wamego Police Chief Dale Burton said that they were looking for Beningo Aquino, Jr., who has a Riley County no-bond warrant for possession of narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and criminal use of a weapons. Riley County also has an $8,000 warrant on Aquino for possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

“We had intel that he was at 613 Ash St.,” Burton said. “We tried to make contact with him multiple times this week and he ran from us, so we called in the Marshal Service to help us out. The Kansas Highway Patrol High Risk team (also) showed up to assist.”

The incident began about 1 p.m. this afternoon. Over the course of several hours, the Marshals periodically sounded sirens and informed the suspect that they had a felony warrant, he was under arrest, and that they knew he was in the house. The announcement ordered him to come out, and as of 6 p.m., he had not. The Kansas Highway patrol then brought in a tactical vehicle.

Approximately 30 law enforcement officials from around the state are present in Wamego including the Wamego Police Department, Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, Riley County Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, and U.S. Marshals Service, along with Pottawatomie County EMS.

The incident caused USD 320 to do a “controlled release” of its students. The district sent out a message about 3:10 p.m., noting “Please be aware of a police presence near the Methodist Church on Lincoln. Student dismissal from all buildings will be a controlled release.”

The message went on to add the buses would be running normally, including the shuttle bus and that parents picking up students were requested to follow the instructions of the school staff.

Additionally, the Methodist church announced that all meetings and groups were postponed tonight. “We ask everyone to avoid the church this evening so first responders can address the situation appropriately,” wrote Rev. Alex Rossow, in a email.
